Tiling Tips & Considerations

Here are some useful tips and things to consider when tiling:

  1. For additional contrast & a more authentic "farm style" look, try using a wider grouting gap
  2. To avoid unnecessary off cuts or uneven symmetry, first consider where to start tiling. A good tiler will always check this first.
  3. Use a small tile for small areas and a large tile for larger areas. ie use the 230x230mm in bathrooms & the large 460x460 on larger areas like patios, & flowing indoor areas.
  4. Use the 'textured' or' slate' finish tiles on outdoor areas that are likely to get wet, or use our non-slip sealer on smooth tiles that are laid around areas likely to get wet.
  5. Finish your garden or lawn area off with Africotta's garden edging/cobbles
  6. Leave a 100mm gap between pavers and plant Dwarf Mondo Grass as a filler, or use small stones to create a romantic area or pathway.
  7. Instead of using commercially available grout, one can also use a mix of cement/plaster sand at a ratio of 1:3
  8. As any cement product is porous, we strongly recommend using a sealer to avoid unsightly stains from fatty foods etc. We supply 2 different types of sealer, one more matt, the other more gloss,
  9. or one can go about sealing with the 'traditional method' see "cleaning and sealing guidelines" page
  10. When tiling, wipe off any excess grout from the tiles before it dries – this makes it easier when it comes to cleaning the tiles before the sealers are applied.
  11. During construction, cover the paved areas to protect against damage and possible staining from mortar or paint.
